Sure. At my previous company we had a reporting service for our B2B clients, and some reports took up to ten minutes to generate. Clients complained, and support was getting about thirty tickets a week about it.
I was the backend developer responsible for that service. First, I profiled the slowest reports and found that most of the time was spent on a few heavy aggregation queries. I added two composite indexes and moved the heaviest aggregations to a nightly job that precomputed the data. I also added caching for the most popular report types.
As a result, ninety percent of reports now generate in under thirty seconds, and the tickets about slow reports almost disappeared. The main lesson for me was to measure first and only then optimize.
